M&A News: Hertz Aims to Push Forward With Dollar Thrifty Deal

The number of car rental companies has gone from about nine major players in the United States to three in just the past few years. National bought Alamo, Avis hooked up with Budget, Thrifty merged with Dollar and then Hertz acquired the bankrupt Advantage. Enterprise Rent-A-Car then acquired the combined National and Alamo fleet in 2007 from the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, making it the largest rental car company in North America.

Monthly data showing more jobs were lost in the recession – Surprised or not?

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said he was not making a prediction and had not seen official data in advance, but rather had read a news article that pointed to the possibility of a revision.

“There will be a jobs revision I’m told tomorrow that’s likely to show additional job loss at the first part of the recession that started in December 2007, making the whole of job loss that we’ve dealt with even deeper,” Gibbs said.

BofA loses federal racial bias claim

Administrative Law Judge Linda Chapman ruled the Charlotte-based bank was biased against African-American applicants for entry-level jobs in 1993 and from 2002-05. The findings were the result of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.

Supreme Court to Decide – HR News

The U.S. Supreme Court Nov. 10, 2009, heard arguments in a case that raises the question of the appropriate standard for determining a company’s place of business for purposes of federal diversity jurisdiction. The answer to the question will establish when certain class-action lawsuits brought by employees in plaintiff-friendly state court can be removed by corporations to federal court, a venue they might prefer (Hertz Corp. v. Friend (08-1107)).
